How it works
A HUS file starts with a header that lists the stitch count, the number of colors, the design extents and the color list as indexes into a fixed Viking thread palette of 29 colors.
The stitch data is split into three separate streams (commands, X moves and Y moves), and each stream is compressed. This makes HUS files small, but it also makes the format harder to write correctly, so fewer free tools can save HUS than can read it.
Newer Viking machines prefer VP3, but HUS remains common in design shops because so many older machines are still in use.
What the file stores
- Stitches, jumps and trims (compressed)
- Viking palette colors
- Design extents
Watch out for
- Only 29 palette colors.
- Not every free converter can write HUS; test the file on your machine.
Machines that read .HUS
- Husqvarna Viking (also supported on many models)
Support differs between models and generations, so always confirm in your machine's manual.
